Welcome!
Phnom Penh Sleeps is an online guide to help visitors find their way around Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Cambodia is a country with a magnificent ancient history, a very tragic recent history, a hopeful present and a bright future. As the capitol city of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Phnom Penh presents many of the countries most important cultural and historical treasures (apart from Angkor) and the best in modern conveniences. View ancient relics at the National Museum of History. Remember the tragic loss of life at the memorials of S21 and the Killing Fields. Spend a day at an orphanage sharing with children in need. View the Kingdom's splender at the Royal Pallace. After that... relax at one of the many pubs and fine restaurants on the riverside serving fine cuisines from around the world. Phnom Penh is a city where the ancient, modern and future colide at teh crossroads to Bangkok, Saigon and southern Loas. |

Location! Location! Location!
Phnom Penh sleeps focuses on the river-front area. This is by no means the only place you can stay, but this is where the action is. At the riverfront you will find the large majority (or the highest concentration) of restaurants, pubs, cafes, hotels, guesthouses and tour companies targeting backpackers and travelors on small budgets. Just below this area you will find the Royal Pallace and National Museum of History, and just in from the river the Central Market. All 3 places are must-visit sites.
The high number of expats and NGO workers in Phnom Penh means that the city has many conveniences for foreigners that are lacking in neighboring Vietnam and Laos. In the riverside area are several bookstores that offer the best selection of foreign/English books in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. The "strip" offer excellent cuisine from America, France, Italy, Australia, the UK, Germany and New Zealand, as well as other countries. It is very difficult to find this quality and selection in dining in Neighboring Vietnam, despite the higher standard of living in Saigon and internetional presence. Phnom Penh offers a great get-away for expats who have been in Vietnam for a while, or travelors that are tired from their tour of Angkor and need a rest. |
